KEVIN FISHER
"Enfant de la Balle" which
definition is an artist raised and formed by professionals, KEVIN FISHER
was born and raised in New York City and had design
on his mind as others have
Georgia.
In school, he designed yearbooks
and chose the school of hard knocks versus colleges and universities.
After all, he was (and still
is) a New Yorker, so why loose time and money in universities when great
mentors in the photography and graphic design field
such as Rick Fiala, Bob
Cato, Steve Weininger, and Guillaume Bruneau among others could take him
under their wings...and they did.
Before landing at Audubon
Magazine (a dream come true) where he has been the art director for the
magazine as well as for the Audubon annual report for
the last 8 years and going
strong, Kevin's road has been prolific and rewarding.
He started at the tender
age of 17, at a literary magazine for gays and lesbians called Christopher
Street, which gave him invaluable experience. After two
years, he moved on to Ziff-Davis
where at 19 years of age, he literally grew up. He was an associate art
director and worked at Boating, Skiing, Popular
Science and Modern Bride.
At 26, Creative Director Steve Weininger hired him to be art director for
the launch of Photo-Design magazine, where he stayed
until the magazine was sold.
He then became an art director at East-West Network and art directed Vis
à Vis, the (then titled) magazine of United Airlines.
After 6 years with United,
he left to return to Skiing magazine (Times Mirror) as art director. Six
years later he went to Hachette Filipacchi's Custom Group
to try his hand at custom
publishing. He designed and art directed an interesting group of magazines
including Mercedes Benz's Momentum and TrumpStyle
and designed formats for
AOL and Universal Studios.
In his spare time Kevin
art directs Film Comment, the magazine of the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Under his tutelage, Audubon
received numerous awards, the most recent, the National Magazine Finalist
2007 for General Excellence, the gold medal for
illustration and photography
and the silver medal for design from Folio, both received in September
2007 and Communication Arts Award of Excellence/Photo
Annual (every year from
2000 to 2007) to name a few. When asked what he loves best in life, Kevin
mentions photography, film, food and friends and only the uninspiring political
landscape receives negative reviews.

The Nature of Bore Holes,
Audubon (September-October 2007)
I have been doing maps for
Audubon since 1993 and working with Kevin Fisher for almost that long.
Kevin is an "artist's artist"
and the kind of design director all illustrator's love to work with.
His direction is always
clear and professional but kept to the minimum.
He gives me the freedom
to interpret each project in my own way.
This makes working with
Kevin an ongoing pleasure.
For this map the assignment
required a visual and written explanation of the tidal bores in the Bay
of Fundy.
Kevin provided me a beautiful
page design to work withen and a list of labels and illustration requirements.
Throughout the years of
working together, Kevin and I have evolved a sort of short-hand understanding
of what
he wants for the maps or
bird illustrations in Audubon.
Facts and clarity are important
but just as important is that the map look and feel like a small piece
of art.
